Mayor Wilson Asks City’s Inspector General to Review Public Information Response Following Bite of Seattle Shooting
Mayor Katie Wilson has requested that the Office of Inspector General conduct an independent after-action review of the flow of public information following the July 26 mass shooting at the Bite of Seattle.
The review will examine the timeline of public communications following the shooting, identify any delays and their causes, and produce recommendations where warranted to strengthen coordination and protocols in future critical incidents. The Mayor is directing all involved City departments and offices to cooperate fully with the OIG, providing relevant records and participating in interviews.
“In the aftermath of a community tragedy like the gun violence at the Bite of Seattle, it’s essential for government agencies to come together and assess our actions, evaluate critical functions like communication between departments and with residents, and provide the public with a transparent and robust review,” said Inspector General Lisa Judge. “OIG has begun a review of the timeliness and effectiveness of communication between responders and with community during and after the shooting. We hope to complete this review this Fall to quickly learn any lessons that may improve the City’s response to a tragic and dangerous event.”
“The people of Seattle deserve timely, accurate information after major public safety events, and I want to understand clearly how the process can be improved,” said Mayor Wilson. “The Inspector General’s office is the right entity to conduct this review, and I am directing every department to give them full cooperation.”
Interim Seattle Police Chief Andre Sayles expressed full support for the review.
“The members of SPD are committed to transparency and to continuous improvement,” said Interim Chief Sayles. “We will cooperate fully with this process and welcome the Inspector General’s assessment.”
OIG’s findings will be shared with the Mayor’s Office and the Seattle City Council’s Public Safety Committee, and the final report will be published publicly on the OIG website. The review is anticipated to be completed by mid-December.
