Ranking Member Cantwell Statement on Meta Settlement

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, released the following statement on the $17.1 billion settlement with Meta announced by a bipartisan group of attorneys general, including Washington Attorney General Brown, in a case alleging the company knowingly designed Facebook and Instagram with addictive features, misled the public about the safety of the platforms and violated COPPA by collecting children’s data without parental consent. Washington State will receive a minimum of $237 million over the next 10 years and could receive up to $339 million.

“Meta has known for years that its products have addictive design features that harm kids. Today’s settlement finally holds the company accountable for its actions by requiring Meta to adopt major changes to make Facebook and Instagram safer for kids online. Under the $17 billion landmark settlement, the State of Washington will receive hundreds of millions of dollars to protect consumers and address the mental health impacts of social media on kids. This decision is welcome news, but it is past time for Congress to step up and protect kids’ online privacy and safety at the federal level.”
