Mayor Wilson Announces Free Drop-In Recreation Programs During Potential SPS Teacher Strike
Seattle (September 1) – In the event of a strike and delayed start to the school year, the City of Seattle will offer free recreation drop-in programs at community centers to support Seattle families, Mayor Wilson announced today.
“I, like many Seattle families, hope Seattle Public Schools and SEA leadership come to a fair agreement that navigates challenging economic conditions on all sides, respects educators and school staff, and gives students the support they need,” said Mayor Katie Wilson. “As a mother and working parent, I recognize the vital work that educators provide for our children, and also the stress that families face when our public schools are not functioning.”
“I am directing Seattle Parks and Recreation to provide short-term childcare access to Seattle families in the event of a strike. My administration will stay in close communication with Seattle Public Schools, SEA, and community leaders to ensure Seattle families have the support they need.

Free Recreation Programs for Kindergarten – 6th Grade (Registration Required)
In the event of a strike, Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) and the Associated Recreation Council (ARC) will offer free, staffed drop-in recreation activities for SPS students in kindergarten through 6th grade at four designated community centers. Priority will be given to children currently enrolled in SPR childcare programs.

Seattle Preschool Program Information
Seattle Preschool Program (SPP) sites operated by SPS are scheduled to begin Tuesday, September 8. Should a strike continue through September 8, the start of preschool will be delayed at those sites.
SPP sites operated by community organizations, including those at Seattle Parks and Recreation locations, will open as scheduled on September 8.
Child Care Assistance Program
Families participating in the City’s Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP) will automatically receive additional subsidies to cover costs associated with full-day care if their provider has capacity.
Families enrolled in before- or after-school childcare in an SPS building should contact their childcare provider directly regarding operating hours. Find the full list of SPS childcare partners here.
