Whatcom County Announces Flood Preparedness Week, Oct. 12–16

With flood season approaching, Whatcom County will host a Flood Preparedness Week Oct. 12- 16, 2026. This countywide effort brings together local government, emergency responders, and community partners to help residents prepare before flooding happens, while spotlighting flood mitigation projects underway and the County's work to build greater flood resilience.

Throughout the week, the County will share simple steps residents can take to get ready, including how to assemble a grab-and-go emergency kit, sign up for emergency alerts, and harden a home against flood damage. The week will also include updates from our annual storm briefing, distribution of the flood newsletter to county residents, and an in-person open house. The event will provide residents a chance to connect directly with the people leading flood preparedness, mitigation, and recovery work across the county.

Flood Preparedness Open House

The open house will include a short presentation from Whatcom County Public Works and local leaders on preparing for flood season, current mitigation projects, and how future flood management decisions are made. Resource tables throughout the evening will connect attendees with local emergency responders, recovery organizations, and other community partners for practical preparedness tools and information. Staff will be available to provide flood hazard maps and guidance for reducing flood hazards.

Participating agencies include the Whatcom County Department of Emergency Management, Whatcom County River & Flood Division, Whatcom County Search and Rescue, Fire District 1, Whatcom County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Opportunity Council,  Whatcom County Libraries, and Washington State Department of Ecology representing the Transboundary Flood Initiative.
