Plan for significant highway construction across the Puget Sound region, Oct. 1-5

SEATTLE – People traveling across the greater Puget Sound region or headed to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport should prepare for overlapping construction closures starting Thursday, Oct. 1, to Monday, Oct. 5.

Crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation have major construction closures and lane reductions that will affect travel on Interstate 5, I- 405, State Route 520 and SR 99.

The work will reduce capacity, leading to longer and less predictable travel times across the region. People traveling should expect congestion, allow more time to travel and check conditions for their entire trip before heading out.

People traveling should be prepared for:

A full closure of the I-5 express lanes through Seattle.
Continued lane reductions of northbound I-5 across the Ship Canal Bridge.
A full closure of eastbound SR 520 between I-5 and Montlake Boulevard.
Southbound I-405 lane reductions in Tukwila.
A closure of the I-405/Northeast 85th Street interchange in Kirkland.
An overnight closure of the SR 99 Tunnel.
Lane reductions across the SR 99 Aurora Bridge.

Weekend-long full closure of the I-5 express lanes

The I-5 express lanes through Seattle will close from 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5. Crews working on the Revive I-5: Ship Canal Bridge Preservation project will use the closure to access the underside of the bridge for drainage improvements. The I-5 express lanes have only been open northbound during construction. Northbound mainline I-5 continues to be reduced to two lanes across the Ship Canal Bridge.

Weekend-long full closure of eastbound SR 520 between I-5 and Montlake Boulevard

Eastbound SR 520 between I-5 and Montlake Boulevard in Seattle will close for construction from 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, until 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5. All traffic from I-5 wanting to enter eastbound SR 520 will need to use alternate routes. The Montlake Boulevard on-ramp to eastbound SR 520 will remain open.

Crews will use this closure to prepare sections of the existing bridge and remaining portions of the old off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard for removal. This work is part of the SR 520 Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid Project.

Southbound I-405 lane reductions and HOV ramp closure in Tukwila

Up to two lanes will close on southbound I-405 in Tukwila from 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3 to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4. The southbound I-405 HOV off-ramp to northbound I-405 will also close, affecting trips to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

Crews will pave the roadway as a part of the I-405/Renton to Bellevue Widening and Express Toll Lanes Project.

I-405/Northeast 85th Street interchange closure in Kirkland, Oct. 1-5

The northbound and southbound I-405 on- and off-ramps (Exit 18) in Kirkland will close from:

9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, to 5 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2.
10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5.

Northeast 85th Street will also close between Sixth Street and 120th Avenue Northeast.

Detours will be in place. Crews will pave Northeast 85th Street as part of the I-405/Northeast 85th Street Interchange and Inline BRT Station Project.

Overnight SR 99 Tunnel closure

The SR 99 Tunnel will close from 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, to 6 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, for routine maintenance.

SR 99 Aurora Bridge lane reductions

Crews will reduce lanes across the Aurora Bridge for maintenance work. The two right southbound lanes will be closed from 5 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 3. The two right northbound lanes will be closed from 5 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 4.

Plan ahead

Travelers should expect longer and less predictable trips. Delays may occur in new places and at new times, and conditions may change week to week as construction work moves around the region during the good weather window needed for much of this work.

To help ease congestion and delays, people can use transit and park-and-ride options, be flexible about travel times and plan ahead. Drivers should slow down, stay alert and follow posted signs when approaching and traveling through work zones. These choices can make a meaningful difference during major closures and help keep both travelers and highway crews safe.
